While the wholesale tree guards government

While the wholesale tree guards government on its part has not officially said anything regarding completely banning single-use plastic, there was apprehension within the industry that if anything to that effect was annou-nced on October 2, then it could have been disastrous for the entire value supply chain.During his August 15 address, Mr Narendra Modi had called upon people to pledge that they would give up single-use plastic by October 2, 2019, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. Rather, we can reduce plastic pollution by thinking of novel ways to recycle packaging material in an eco-friendly manner," industry players unanimously said while launching the initiative under aegis of PACE.

"There is indeed pressure from the government on this issue," the representative a key packaging body said.Under this initiative, PACE has launched an initiative titled Karo Sambhav which will focus on setting up of infrastructure for collecting and recycling of used packaging material, with the aim that no recyclable packaging material reaches landfills by 2025. "The use of fossil-fuel feedstocks, combined with the energy required to manufacture PET, generates more than four tons of CO2 for every ton of PET that's produced," Kanan said. Many plastic products are made from a polymer called polyethylene terephthalate (PET), also known as polyester.

PET is derived from refined petroleum and natural gas..Researchers, including graduate student Aanindeeta Banerjee, focused on an alternative to PET called polyethylene furandicarboxylate (PEF). The researchers have been experimenting with furfural, a compound made from agricultural waste that has been widely used for decades. But making FDCA from furfural and CO2 typically requires hazardous chemicals that are expensive and energy-intensive to make. They combined carbonate with CO2 and furoic acid, a derivative of furfural and heated the mixture to about 200 degrees Celsius to form a molten salt. The bottleneck has been figuring out a commercially viable and sustainable way to produce FDCA."If you could do that without using a lot of non-renewable energy, you could dramatically lower the carbon footprint of the plastics industry," said Kanan.
